Pancake Breakfast Raises Money for Scholarships

Published by admin under Central, News, Achievements

Thanks to everyone who came out and enjoyed some pancakes at this year’s Pancake Breakfast fundraiser. The event raised over $5,200 for HHSTA’s scholarship fund for students considering college majors in education or a vocational field. Many thanks also to our “pancake queen” Annette DeAngelis, HHSTA Social Chair, who organizes the even for us. This year we had over 50 faculty and staff take part in the event.

Here are some highlights from the event shared by Annette:

  •  Jim Kupres bought 65 tickets and treated his entire Cross Country team!
  • Early birds: Marge McMahon, who has volunteered the early shift every year since I’ve known her, actually rearranged family plans to be here at 6am. Myles Laffey also does the early shift. When I walked in at 6:30am, Paul Woods was already fast at work flipping.
  • So many people volunteered with their children:  Renee Sandoval, Becky Wilcox, Aerial Diaz, Valerie Ruth. Thanks to Lilly Barcelona for taking several kids to the parade!
  • Chris Hicks ran to the Jewel before her shift because we were out of singles.
  • Abbey Green offered to stay the entire day.
  • Barry Smith and Liz Suchomel, Jim McGuire and Cindy Rodkin, made some wonderful and interesting decorative type of pancakes.
  • Gia M. jumped in and started a new process for organizing trays.
  • Barb Plantz had things set up for me when I walked in
  •  We couldn’t pull Beth Bannon away from the grill!  We kept trying to relieve her but she was having too much fun!

Thanks again to everyone in the Association and in the community for making this event such a success.

Hinsdale Central Name One of Nation’s Best by Newsweek

From Patch:

Hinsdale Central High School was rated the 69th best high school in the U.S. by Newsweek in the 2011 edition of the magazine’s annual “America’s Best High Schools” feature.

The local school was the No. 3-ranked Illinois high school. Only Northside College Prep in Chicago (No. 24 nationwide) and Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy in Aurora (No. 37 nationwide) placed ahead of Hinsdale Central.

Newsweek changed their ranking criteria this year to include a wide variety of student achievement factors such as graduation rate, matriculation rate, AP tests taken, AP scores, ACT/SAT scores and AP courses offered. Other Illinois schools ranked in the top 100 were Stevenson High School and Glenbrook North High School. Illinois schools breaking the top 200 were Prospect, New Trier, Riverside-Brookfield, and Maine South.

Principal McGrory had a good explanation for yet another example of Central’s continuation of District 86’s Tradition of Excellence:

When asked why he thinks Hinsdale Central is a top school in the U.S., McGrory said it has a “dynamic” that makes for good students.

“We put such a high value on hiring the best teachers out there,” the principal said. “The community puts such a high value on education and they’re willing to support it, and then the expectation that the community has and the school has for the children really creates an environment that allows the students to succeed.”

ECRA Survey of D86 Graduates

How well does D86 prepare students for their journeys into higher education? The ECRA Group was hired by the Board of Education to survey our past graduates to find out. The survey of District graduates is best explained by the ECRA group directly from their report:

Hinsdale District 86 partnered with ECRA Group, Inc., a leader in educational research, to garner perceptions of graduates’ high school experience and gauge a picture of the paths they took after high school.

[…]

In the winter of the 2009-2010 school year, quantitative and qualitative data were collected through an online survey of graduates from the years 2005 through 2009. The survey instrument was a modified version of the Graduate Survey instrument used in 2008, based on suggestions presented by District 86 administration.

[…]

During the survey process, an attempt was made to reach all graduates from the 2005 through 2009 classes. Results are compared to those gathered in 2008 from the 2002 through 2006 classes. A postcard mailing was sent to all 2005 through 2009 graduates at their last known address, and emails were sent to parents with the request that the survey access be sent on to graduates. ECRA also used the social networking site Facebook as a tool to recruit survey respondents.

The survey results generated responses from 493 former graduates of District 86 (compared to 345 in 2008), with a margin of error of three-percent according to ECRA.

Highlights of the data included 97% of graduates grading the quality of education received in District 86 an “A” or “B”, with 71% rating this an “A”. Regarding their high school preparation enabling them to compete with their collegiate peers, 90% rated their preparation as either “A” or “B”. Where it came to their own preparation for higher education, 94% rated the district as either “A” or “B”, with 64% rating their preparation an “A”. When grading their former teachers, 92% rated district teachers either “A” or “B”, with the majority rated “A”.

Regarding teachers, Principal Mike McGrory shared the following with the faculty ECRA’s report:

Hinsdale Central Graduates gave high praises to their high school. A major theme that emerged from the responses was the appreciation for Hinsdale Central teachers, who were described as amazing, encouraging, caring, passionate about teaching and learning, and always willing to help. Graduates felt well-prepared for a higher education, and the diversity of opportunities afforded students did not go unnoticed by graduates. Graduates gave high compliments to the athletic and music programs. The guidance services offered at Central were also noted as beneficial.

Some even said that they felt over prepared for college, which made adjusting to college coursework more manageable. Some felt that having experienced the rigorous and competitive environment at Central helps them compete with their peers today. They enjoyed the additional opportunities to excel and felt that the relationships they formed with other students, teachers and coaches were highly valuable. They also mentioned numerous teachers, coaches and administrators by name and praised the efforts these educators put in every day to help students reach their full potential.

Many students expressed that they did not realize the full benefit they reaped from attending Central until after they left. To quote one student, “When I got to school, I was shocked at how well Central had prepared me for college-level schooling.” Others noted that they felt a sense of the importance and closeness of community during their high school years, and this community support helped motivate them to succeed.

Pancakes 2010!

Can you believe it’s nearly Homecoming already! One reason is that, unlike the last couple of years, Homecoming at Central is the weekend BEFORE Columbus day this year. And with Homecoming there’s the parade, the football, the activities and of course - THE PANCAKES!

Homecoming at Central is when HHSTA traditionally holds our Annual Pancake Breakfast. This year, teachers will be preparing the hot and delicious treats on Saturday, October 2nd from 7:30am to 11:00am. Tickets are available from any Central teacher or on the day of the event at the door. Tickets are $5.50 in advance and $6.00 at the door. Kids 3-12 cost $3.00 and children under 2 eat free.

Come see current and former teachers do daring deeds like flip pancakes, juggle cups of coffee, and balance pans of hot sausages before the parade and games. We’ll even see if we can get new principal Mike McGrory to show off his pancake flipping skills. Tickets can be purchased in advance from teachers for a price of $5.50; tickets are $6 at the door. Proceeds from the Pancake Breakfast benefit the Hinsdale High School Teachers Association Scholarship Fund.

For more information, please contact the event coordinator, our own “pancake princess” Dr. Annette DeAngelis-Marshall at 630-570-8337.
